For those living in an urban area, it may seem impossible to own more than one dog, but adding another furry friend to your home could play a role in improving dog wellness for your current canine. Unlike felines where the smell of a multi-use litter box could be taxing in small space, canines only need a few basic things in order to be happy - and you probably have most of the supplies ready for his arrival!

According to DogChannel.com, taking care of another dog basically requires food and water, proper veterinary care, daily exercise, love and affection and a warm bed to call his own. When you really get down to it, taking care of one dog compared to two dogs really isn't that big of a change in lifestyle. Obviously, it will cost more in food, boarding and veterinary costs, but if you can afford it, it's absolutely worth it. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind to make the adjustment a bit easier on yourself.

Adopting an adult canine will spare you from the concerns that come with owning a puppy, and chances are, he will be far more socialized than a younger pooch. Better yet, older dogs are often overlooked at animal shelters, so you will be giving a canine a second chance at life. Dogs are pack animals by nature, so having a pal in your apartment while you're away at work or even when you're taking a trip to the dog park can improve his overall well-being. While some dogs will have some growing pains with a new addition to the family, unless your canine is hyper-aggressive, they will be able to figure out the pack order.

When it comes to proper pet care, taking care of two dogs is just as easy as one, but you'll have to multitask. When planning a trip to the vet, see if you can bring both dogs at the same time. If your current canine has a few toys that he's not using, give them to your new furry friend. While the initial cost may be a bit steep, you may just see happier and more well-adjusted dogs as a result and you'll gain the satisfaction of giving a new four-legged friend a good home.
