While it may finally seem like the winter weather is here to stay, there are still many risks in the great outdoors that could pose significant danger to your canine. Ticks are a huge concern during the cold weather, as they are looking for their last blood meal to make it through the tough season. This is no time of year to let your guard down with flea treatments, and the risk of Lyme disease is a constant risk for you and your family. Luckily, with the use of Hartz products and a few lifestyle changes, you can keep your pooch safe from these pesky critters.

First and foremost, you should get into the habit of visually inspecting your dog's coat after taking walks or if he ventures into a heavily wooded area. Ticks latch onto your dog's skin along his neck or near his legs, so be sure to give his coat a quick look after you come indoors. If you do happen to spot a tick, don't remove it with your fingernails! Ticks use their teeth to burrow into your canine's skin, so you'll need a pair of tweezers to remove him. Be sure to grasp its head first and then slowly take him out so that no pieces are left behind.

Topical drops such as Hartz UltraGuard Pro Flea and Tick Drops, are an extra layer of protection that can give you peace of mind during any season. These drops are placed at the skin level between your dog's shoulder blades and down the length of his back to the tail. They will provide up to 30 days of protection from fleas, ticks and mosquitoes and will kill them on contact.

You can also invest in tick-fighting collar that will protect your four-legged friend throughout the winter. A Hartz UltraGuard Plus Flea and Tick Collar will protect your pooch from the invasion of fleas and ticks for up to 7 months. As an added bonus, it also uses an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR), which inhibits the life cycle of the insect and stops its from reaching adulthood and reproducing.

These Hartz products will go a long way toward protecting your furry friend from ticks, and keep him and your family happy and healthy throughout the winter months.
