Ole, a Welsh Corgi, beat the odds and returned to his owner after being buried in an avalanche.
Corgi survives avalanche and makes an incredible trek home
February 02, 2012
Recently, the town of Billings, Montana, has been dealing with the tragedy of Dave Gaillard, a Bozeman resident that lost his life in a recent avalanche while on a walk with his wife Kerry and their Welsh Corgi, Ole, according to KULR8.com. While Kerry was able to grab onto a tree branch and survive, both Dave and Ole were buried in nearly 12 feet of snow. The accident shocked the small town and highlighted the dangers of the mountainous terrain, but recently the residents of Billings were given a huge boost. Ole, who had been swept away by the torrent of snow, managed to burrow his way out of the snow and walk miles to the hotel where the couple had been staying.
Robert Weinstein, who was staying at the Alpine Motel in Cooke City, was stunned to spot Ole when the dog was sitting outside the couples' motel door.
"God, this is crazy. There's no way it can be, but it has to be their dog, there's nobody in town that has a corgi breed," Weinstein told KXLH.com. "I went and got some food, I fed it two times. It just ate like it hadn't eaten in four days."
For Kerry Giallard, the reunion with Ole was certainly bittersweet, but the dog's survival was something that helped lifted the family's and the community's spirits. Ole is now at home with Kerry and he is in good health. The story is an uplifting twist on an otherwise terrible tragedy, and it shows just how resilient canines can be when faced with a life or death situation.
Quite possibly the most amazing part of the story was how Ole was able to find the hotel where his owners were staying. The Alpine Motel was miles away from the site of the avalanche, so it's a total mystery how the small dog managed to find his way through unfamiliar terrain. These stories speak to the amazing sense of direction that canines have and the unparalleled drive that they have to return to their owners.
The recent avalanche was a shock to the people of Billings, Montana, but the Ole's heart-wrenching story of survival has left an indelible mark on the community and has helped shine an uplifting light on an otherwise tragic story.
