A nasty fall from a rooftop or an open window is the worst nightmare for every urban dog owner, and that worst case scenario came true for Tracey Aron, a New York City dog owner. Her pooch, a Shiba Inu named Kai, was enjoying some afternoon exercise on the rooftop of her Upper West Side apartment when he took a wrong turn and ended up plummeting four stories to a ledge below. Aron contends that Kai must have thought there was another roof underneath the ledge, and the protective fencing that usually is there was removed for maintenance. Kai ended up falling 50 feet to another ledge below, and initially Aron feared the worst. What sounded like the perfect storm of bad circumstances turned out to end miraculously for Aron, according to MSNBC.com.

"He just launched himself from the back of the building, thinking there was another roof," Aron told the news source. "We watched him fall, and then heard a thud and his crying."

Aron rushed to her nearby neighbor's apartment and called the police to ask for help. After being whisked off to veterinary intensive care and kept there for 3 nights, the doctors were shocked to find that Kai hadn't broken any bones. Unfortunately, he was experiencing some pretty significant swelling that made him move a lot slower in the days following his fall. Kai is currently on medication to treat his injuries and is generally taking it easy at home as he tries to regain his strength. However, it's nothing short of a miracle that the fall didn't end worse for the resilient pooch.

In the aftermath of this potential disaster, Aron has decided to take him for regular walks in the park and won't let Kai on the rooftop unless there is plenty of protective fencing there. Kai has been recuperating from his fall quite rapidly, and Aron believes she is blessed that it didn't turn out much worse. The two-year-old pup certainly has quite a story to tell, and Aron is overjoyed that she will have her bouncing pooch around for years to come.

Shiba Inus are known for their indelible spirit and incredible intelligence, but it's safe to say that Kai will be pausing for a moment to take a look over the ledge before he takes a leap anytime soon!
